Ben Marcus helped define one of the most critical layers of drone integration: airspace management. As Co-founder of AirMap, he played a foundational role in developing digital infrastructure that allows drones to safely share the skies with manned aircraft. Marcus was instrumental in shaping AirMap’s role in global airspace innovation. Under his direction, AirMap participated in UTM trials, research collaborations, and consortiums that helped define how digital airspace services should function.
His efforts contributed to AirMap’s expansion into more than 25 countries, providing localized UTM services and APIs to governments, airports, and enterprise clients. Marcus also positioned the company as a white-label solution for air navigation service providers (ANSPs) seeking to modernize their low-altitude airspace systems.

AirMap’s Acquisition and Ben Marcus’ Continued Influence
In 2021, AirMap was acquired by DroneUp, a U.S.-based drone logistics company backed by Walmart. The acquisition brought AirMap’s UTM capabilities into a larger ecosystem of drone operations, where real-time airspace management is essential for delivery, mapping, and emergency services.
Though Marcus exited day-to-day leadership prior to the acquisition, his work laid the technical and regulatory foundation that DroneUp and others continue to build upon. Today, Marcus remains an active voice in the aviation and autonomy sectors, contributing to discussions around advanced air mobility (AAM), vertiports, and next-gen aviation infrastructure.
